The Sun Doesn’t Have to Be Your Enemy — Dr. S. Shares

While the sun is the primary source of life, just 15 to 20 minutes of exposure to it is enough to cause skin damage. Generally, exposure to too much sunlight can cause skin damage, heat exhaustion, vision issues, and premature ageing. Sunlight also poses a significant risk of developing skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in Canada.

Still, the sun doesn’t have to be our enemy. We shouldn’t be afraid of it! We all need sunlight, and we can’t avoid outdoor activities entirely due to our everyday lives. Moreover, sunlight provides us with several essential benefits to our bodies and minds. It enables us to stay physically energized, produce vitamin D, reduce stress, boost serotonin, and improve our overall well-being. Some studies have discovered that sunbathing can even extend our lives by up to two years. Therefore, we should enjoy the sun as long as we follow the recommended routines to protect us from its harmful effects.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Sun

Today, I want to tell you about my love for the sun, how I’ve suffered because of it, and how now, I use three products daily to enjoy it safely. When I was a child, the awareness about the dangers that come with unprotected sun exposure was not at admirable levels. Combine a careless attitude, a lot of time in the sun, and fair skin, and you get what I got — skin cancer. Fortunately, I was able to beat it.

After that, I became an advocate for enjoying the sun safely and responsibly. Do I hide my skin from the sun and advise everyone to stay away from it? Absolutely not.  Our bodies need sunlight the same way they need essential nutrients that maintain our health! In my case, I have to be careful and take precautions to make sure that my cancer doesn’t return. At my clinic, I use my own experience to educate clients about the best barriers and methods for ultraviolet (UV) protection. That’s why I’ve compiled the following list of products and sun protection tips that I use to add a little sunshine into my life while doing my best to protect myself from future issues.

My Three Allies

Using products like sunscreens and serums is vital, not only because they protect you from sunburn and cancer but also because they offer additional benefits. I urge everyone to use sun protection products because they keep you safe from most of the other dangers related to sun damage and other environmental aggressors. Sun damage and Ozone pollution can change the skin structure. Excessive sunlight causes wrinkles, dries out the exposed skin, and slows down the rate of renewal. Moreover, direct sunlight can lead to rough skin, blotchy pigmentation, and more.

Sadly, while a trip to the great outdoors can revitalize you, it can make you look older. My personal preference and my three greatest allies are products by SkinCeuticals. They allow me to enjoy the energizing sensations of the sun’s rays while maintaining the fresh look of my skin. Also, they slow down premature ageing and keep me safe from dangers such as sunburn or air pollution.

1) Anti-Oxidant

One of them, C E Ferulic by SkinCeuticals is a clinically proven anti-oxidant serum. I use it to protect myself from oxidative damage and free radicals caused by UV radiation, air pollution, and other environmental aggressors. I recommend this product at my clinic because it was proven to lower sun and air pollution damage by 41%. It offers a synergistic combination of pure vitamin C (15%), vitamin E (1%), and ferulic acid (0.5%).

What’s more, I’ve been using the C E Ferulic for a few years now. I find that it produces quick and visible anti-ageing effects. I apply it every morning, and it remains active for up to 72 hours. It improves the elasticity of my skin, keeps my complexion fresh, and I always use it before applying any sunscreen.

2) Sunscreen 

I can’t recommend this SkinCeuticals broad-spectrum sunscreen highly enough! Physical FusionUV Defense SPF 50 sunscreen is suitable for all skin types. It is an incredibly special product because it utilizes a combination of 100% artemia salina mineral fillers and a plankton extract. These substances trigger the body’s natural UV defences. The combination also makes my skin resistant to heat-induced stress.

Additionally, its ultra-sheer transparent texture makes it one of my favourite sunscreen products. It spreads easily and creates a weightless glossy finish that helps combat skin ageing, discoloration, and dryness. Plus, its SPF 50 factor provides a nearly complete UVB block. It filters out 98% of UVB. That’s why I always take it with me when I go outdoors and reapply it regularly!

3) Face Exfoliator

Last but not least, the Retexturing Activator is my “secret weapon.” It’s a game-changing serum that will fully exfoliate and hydrate your skin after a few hours in the sun. It optimizes the amino acid supply in your skin to strengthen its external barrier. Also, it stimulates certain enzymes to eliminate wrinkles and surface lines caused by dead cells. That way, the  Retexturing Activator helps with discoloration, dehydration, sensitized skin, ageing, and acne. Additionally, the product is oil-free, and it creates a smooth and soft effect quickly. In my opinion, no other product comes close if you want your skin to retain its fresh glow.

Tips for Preventing Sun Damage

In my opinion, applying sunscreen or other protection products will not be enough to keep your skin safe. You should follow several rules to protect yourself, prevent several types of skin cancer, and keep your skin looking fresh. So remember the following tips:

    • Avoid prime time from 11 AM to 4 PM. This isn’t necessarily the warmest part of the day. However, that’s when the UV rays are the strongest.
    • Cloudy days can also harm you. Up to 95% of UV rays can pass through clouds. Even if you do not see the sun directly, it will affect you. That’s why you should wear protection even when the weather is not sunny.
    • Avoid SPF makeup. Makeup products such as powders and foundations with SPF are not enough. While they protect against UVB rays, they are not enough against the damaging UVA rays.
    • Don’t forget your shades. I always wear sunglasses with UVA protection. They can protect the surface of your eyes against sun damage successfully. What’s more, sunglasses can reduce visible lines, wrinkles, and other signs of ageing around the eyes.
  • Clothes are an effective barrier. Long and baggy fabrics made of densely knitted textiles do an excellent job of blocking UV light. The best protective clothing is made of polyester or nylon. Silk and wool clothing is also effective, but cotton fabrics provide the weakest protection.
  • Wear hats. I never go out without my wide brim sun hat. Wide brim sun hats can shield your neck, ears, face, and eyes. Plus, a hat with UPF 50 fabric will block out 98% of the sun’s rays. On top of that, they look incredibly stylish!


As summer approaches, I urge everyone to pay attention to the dangers of sun damage. What I wrote here today is something that I advise everyone to do. It’s what I always do, and so far, my tips and favourite products have helped me feel healthy and look fresh while enjoying everything that the sun has to offer, minus the downsides.
