The Dermaroller® causes minimally invasive precision micro-injuries of the epidermis and dermis, without causing open wounds or ablative damage. Virtually anyone can safely undergo medical needling with minimal risk of long-term adverse reactions. Contraindications include pregnancy, actively infected or actively inflamed skin, skin irritation, cystic acne, allergies to topical lidocaine, sunburnt skin.

Medical needling is well tolerated by patients but dryness, scaling, redness, and swelling may be seen after treatment, lasting for several days or longer, depending on the depth of the needling. Sun protection is recommended for several weeks after treatment.
The number of treatments required depends on the individual skin condition. 3-4 treatments may be required for most conditions, and it is recommended to have a refresher treatment every year.
