What is Medical Needling?

The non-invasive treatment used to dramatically treat scarring, wrinkles (i.e. lip lines), sun damaged and loose skin (even eye area). A medical handpiece with a separate head of micro needles that when rolled over targeted areas of the face, neck, hands, back etc. stimulate immune response and the collagenesis process. Highly concentrated vitamins are immediately and generously applied to the treated areas which allow for ease of absorption. A favourite with patients who are looking for serious results.

Treatment time: 60 minutes
Downtime: 1 day

How Dermaroller® Micro-needling Works

The Dermaroller® causes minimally invasive precision micro-injuries of the epidermis and dermis, without causing open wounds or ablative damage. The puncturing channels close after a short time and these micro-injuries trigger the body’s wound healing cascade, which induces increased collagen production in the treated skin. Dermaroller® triggers the construction of new tissue by stimulating healthy cell regeneration in precision-targeted areas that show the signs of ageing. It effectively reduces wrinkles, tightens and thickens the skin, and – perhaps most impressively – fills and smooths scars.

  1. Treatment: Dermaroller®’s surgical-grade micro-needles reach beyond the epidermis into the dermis, causing pin-point bleeding and triggering the body’s spontaneous healing response.
  2. Healing Cascade: Within minutes, the perforation channels close and the healing cascade starts, invading the area with collagen-producing fibroblasts and growth-promoting properties.
  3. Younger Looking Skin: New organized collagen & elastin forms, bolstering from within, while the epidermis becomes thicker and more supple, each time a treatment is performed.

Beware of Imitations. Dermaroller® is the original device of its kind. All other derma-rolling devices have been fashioned after the Dermaroller® and it’s important to understand the differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Medical Needling is a procedure that involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny, sterile needles creating a micro-wound. The controlled injury triggers the body to fill these micro-wounds by producing new collagen and elastin in the dermis. This neovascularisation and neocollagenesis following treatment lead to the reduction of scars and skin rejuvenation.

Medical Needling is used to treat the following:

  • Reducing acne and surgical scars (including keloids)
  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Fading stretch marks
  • Reducing pore size
  • Dyspigmentation i.e. melasma
  • Tightening of skin
  • Reducing signs of aging

Virtually anyone can safely undergo medical needling with minimal risk of long-term adverse reactions. Contraindications include pregnancy, actively infected or actively inflamed skin, skin irritation, cystic acne, allergies to topical lidocaine, sunburnt skin.

Generally, the treated areas recover rapidly from needling. However, there are occasional side effects, which include:

  • Oozing and swelling during the recovery phase
  • Skin infection with bacteria (rare) or cold sores
  • Milia, which can easily be removed
  • Acne flare, which is usually mild

A topical anesthetic is applied to the skin prior to treatment to reduce discomfort and the procedure is pain-free. The depth and speed of the procedure is individual per patient issues.

The initial consultation is approximately 20 minutes and treatment takes approximately 60 minutes.

Medical needling is well tolerated by patients but dryness, scaling, redness, and swelling may be seen after treatment, lasting for several days or longer, depending on the depth of the needling.  Sun protection is recommended for several weeks after treatment.

The number of treatments required depends on the individual skin condition. 3-4 treatments may be required for most conditions, and it is recommended to have a refresher treatment every year.

Collagen Induction Therapy (Micro Needling)

When it comes to minimally invasive treatments, Micro-needling Collagen Induction therapy with the Dermaroller® is clinically proven and is perhaps the most successful treatment available for the common signs and symptoms of ageing such as wrinkles, loss of skin volume, and crepey skin. The Dermaroller® micro-needling treatment is even proven to minimize scars and stretch marks. Dermaroller® therapy triggers the body’s spontaneous healing process, stimulating cell proliferation and causing the formation of new collagen. This results in a thicker, more supple, cellular matrix. Results: visibly younger-looking skin.
