Electrolysis hair removal was developed around 1869 by an ophthalmologist, a medical doctor specializing in the treatment of diseases of the eye, Dr. Charles Michel, who sought a way to safely and effectively remove ingrown eyelashes which frequently caused blindness.
Electrolysis hair removal was adopted by the medical community and then adapted as a treatment for excess hair removal on other parts of the body. The same basic technique, improved and modernized, has been used effectively and safely since those times and is approved by the FDA.

In the hands of a professional Electrologist, electrolysis is completely safe. It is often recommended by the medical profession, and Electrologists often receive referrals from doctors. Proper sterilization procedures are essential and should be explained prior to treatment.

Hundreds of scientific articles published in medical literature state that hair removal by electrolysis is permanent. But – there is also scientific evidence stating that re-growth can occur when a new root cell is formed in the same area.

Compared to other hair removal methods, electrolysis is time-consuming and requires a great commitment of time and money. Depending on how fast your hair grows, it usually takes regular weekly or monthly visits for up to a year to complete the process.

Hair removal by electrolysis can be uncomfortable, and often clients will use a topical anesthetic. Some describe it as a slight heat, tingling or stinging sensation.  Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. Do not hesitate to let your Electrologist know if what you are experiencing is uncomfortable. They are trained to work within your comfort level.

There usually is some redness or swelling and occasionally some pinpoint scabbing following electrolysis hair removal. This is normal and will heal and fall off. Do not pick or scratch to avoid unwanted scarring.    Occasionally you may bruise where an insertion has been done too deep or incorrectly. Ask your Electrologist what else you can do to help the healing process.

Completion time varies with each individual depending on the coarseness of the hair, the number of hairs to be removed and if temporary hair removal methods were previously used. Permanency is achieved through a series of regular treatments determined for each individual. Following treatment, aftercare instructions followed will speed completion. Hormones are a factor. This includes puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and medications. Stress is also a factor which will affect re-growth.

The cost will vary with each individual, depending on the amount of hair to be removed. The total cost may be less than the continuing cost of temporary methods. Hair removal by electrolysis is usually performed at a rate of approximately $50 to $120 per hour.  Purchasing packages are more economical.
